Review: The Little Mermaid (Film)

★★★★

“Wish I could beeeeeeee part of that worldddddd”

#TheLittleMermaid is a live-action remake of the 1998 animated classic we all know and love, directed by Rob Marshall. I had the pleasure of watching the highly anticipated fantasy musical at the Family Event screening Disney held yesterday morning.

The remake follows the first adaptation, plainly; so if you’re a fan of the original, you will enjoy this.

The soundtrack is worth the listen, but I fear not a lot of memorable songs. Major changes to the lyrics and new songs… I don’t know if any bops were made. I left repeating Wish I could beeeeeeee part of that worldddddd; the musical arrangement on this tracj was top tier. I must add, Halles voice is stunning and absolutely captivating,  she is our Ariel.

Now the chemistry between our Ariel and Prince Eric was so beautiful to watch. True love? Yeah yeah I need that (completely unrelated but Bridgerton you have ruined me!) The cast led by Ariel, played by the incredibly talented Halle Bailey, is one of my absolute favourite things in the film. Her mesmerising voice, and the warmth and soul she brought? Yeah, loved! Can’t forget Jonah Hauer-King (our Prince Eric), Melissa McCarthy (banished sea witch Ursala) and Javier Bardem (the powerful King Titan and overprotective Dad) who also brought the heart and energy, making this incredibly memorable. A shout out to Ariels sisters, we love you.

We mustn’t forget the trio, Sebastian, Flounder and Scuttle; they brought so much vibes and comedic touch. Their song Kiss the Girl was absolutely banging - that scene was stunning, it fit so perfectly - I really could feel the love. Slightly off topic, but when I saw Sebastian (voiced by Daveed Diggs) for the first time I must say I was a little scared but after watching grew to love his new look.

CGI was a bit of a let down at times, it didn’t give me the same magic the cartoon version had. Appreciate all the new creative touches, I just slightly lost myself in trying to clock what was real and CGI. However throughly enjoyed the film, worth a watch if you’re a big fan of the original.

Now a joke. Why was King Triton angry over Ariel's report card? Her grades were under the C. Get it, Under The Sea, she lives under the sea.. Alright, no? Well it’s in cinemas May 26th. Go watch!
