Review: August in England by Lenny Henry (Theatre)

★★★★★

Written and performed by Lenny Henry in his playwriting debut, August in England explores a life impacted by the Windrush scandal.

August in England follows August Henderson; a charming, flawed, and with the gift of the gab, we all know a man like him. It gives an insight into the lives impacted by the injustice of the Windrush scandal. It’s hilarious, wholesome, full of vibes, music, familiarity, heart and soul but also heartbreaking and full of pain; it’s beautifully poised The set felt like a home I knew. An incredible moving performance and writing from Lenny Henry.

The show was in a relaxed setting and very much appreciated that. At the Bush, their relaxed performances aim to create a space for everyone, especially those who would benefit from a more informal experience - this theatre stands out from the rest. The Bush is always a good - even just for a drink at the bar or to read a book, Always a pleasure to visit and watch a show here.

August in London explores a life impacted by the Windrush Scandal but we are all aware that there are thousands of people with stories like this. They all deserve to be told. Everyone should watch this tribute to the Windrush Generation. Thank you Lenny, thank you Bush Theatre.

“ You never allow me tell my story. I been trying to tell it someone and nobody listenin’ “
