Join me to celebrate Tate Modern’s 25th Birthday with a Short Film Screening, “A Night of Dreams” (curated by myself, Stafi Samaki, founder of BIB (Black in Britain)) inspired by Dorothea Tanning’s surrealist painting Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (1943).

A curated selection of short films by Black female filmmakers Chelsea Jones-Alleyne, Kemi Anna Adeeko, and Aaliyah Mckay, and a spoken word performance by Shar Oola, which unravel the soft terror and quiet beauty of growing up, coming undone, and remaking the self. Inspired by the haunted domesticities in Dorothea Tanning’s surrealist painting Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (1943) and reimagined through a contemporary lens, this poetic and intimate offering invites audiences to experience the space between dreams and reality

The Poet:

Sharlene ‘Shar’ Oola, is a first-generation Ugandan poet and interdisciplinary artist from London. Her poetry explores themes of identity and personal relationships, dissecting her experience of the world as a black woman.

The poem she will be reading explores black girlhood and using the escapism of dreams to cope with hardship.

Artist, Filmmaker, and London native, CMJA (Chelsea Jones-Alleyne) explores the layered realities of femininity, Black womanhood, and lived experiences.

Falling Apples is a reflective portrait of a first-born daughter in a Caribbean immigrant household, Falling Apples follows one young woman's quiet rebellion against inherited expectations.

See Us Hear Us (2024) | Directed by
Kemi Anna (8 Minutes, 4 Seconds)
Kemi Anna is a British - Nigerian writer/director committed to creating visuals that platform community and culture.

“See Us, Hear Us” produced and created by a youth organisation Milk Honey Bee’s encourages its audience to actively see and hear Black girls, and do more to disrupt the systems that contribute to their oppression.

Mask (2025)  | Written by
Aaliyah McKay (14 minutes)
Aaliyah McKay is a filmmaker exploring identity, vulnerability, and healing through visual storytelling. 

Mask is a short film that blends performance and poetry to unpack the hidden layers behind public personas, particularly among Black women.
